Velvets are quite delicate fabrics. Although they look highly sophisticated and gives off the luxurious vibes, they tend to wear out easy with any slightest friction, therefore when dealing with velvet uphosltery, we're not to avoid cleaning and tending to it instead, we are to put in more care and be more gentle.
In times past, people shy away from velvet fabrics due to the fact that it was percieved to be a high maintainance fabric.
Menwhile, in recent times as now, cleaning techniques and materials that helps the maintainance of this delicate fabric have been made available for all.
These are few tricks to protecting your velvet upholstery and making them last as long as they should.
Spot dry:

As mistakes are inevitable, this method is for spills on the couch. Get a clean towel or paper towel, place it on the spill and allow it to absorb the liquid. Do not rub nor dab the couch with the towel so as to avoid the liquid penetrating into the fibres or the fabric getting lax.
Use brush with soft brittles:

In our day to day activities, dusts are meant to abound, most especially when you have kids. In your care routine, use soft brittled brushes to get debris and dirts in between the fabric out. Avoid hard brittle brushes or you'll be sorry. Just kidding but that's exactly the tool for wears and tears on your velvet fabric.
This should be done every week in order to keep your velvet couch looking fresh.
Deep cleaning:

This can be done by you if you wish but, you need to be extra careful because the wrong materials will give you the direct opposite of your desired result. You can also have a professional fix it up for you. For this process, you need;
* velvet pre treatment solvents or mild detergent in water, to clean the sofa thoroughly with a towel and a soft brittle brush. The velvet pre treatment solvents are used to protect the fabric from wearing out and to strenghten the material.

* vaccum cleaner with fixed clothe on the mouth to get every debris that your brush might have missed.

* a steamer or steaming iron: in the process of getting the velvet cleaned thoroughly, you might leave creases or wrinkles here and there, use the steamer or steaming iron to straighten the fabric again.

Keep away from direct sunlight:

Sunlight on velvet is a no no. The fabric is prone to fading away when left under direct sunlight. Place the velvet couch in an area with shade or get throw blankets or throw pillows to cover it up.
